Benidorm is the European tourist destination with the highest risk of getting sick

Forbes magazine has compiled a list of destinations where travelers have a higher risk of getting sick while on vacation. The Travel Bug Index was created based on an analysis of 2.4 million travel forum posts about the world's most popular destinations. Posts with keywords such as salmonella, gastroenteritis, e-coli, and food poisoning were considered.

At the global level, the list is led by Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic with a score of 90, but at the European level, a Spanish destination stands out, namely Benidorm. However, the magazine stressed that the risk is very low and it is definitely a safe destination. Benidorm is also a destination with a lot of tourists and many different hotels and restaurants, much more than other holiday destinations.

The city on the Costa Blanca ranks first in the European continent but with a much lower index than that of the Dominican Republic. About 4.5% of the approximately 52,000 publications on the Alicante site contained complaints of food poisoning and other contracted illnesses.

Benidorm is joined by London, Sunny Beach in Bulgaria, and Paris in the top 5 of the list. Tenerife rounds out the top 5 with 3% of reviews mentioning illnesses, out of a total of 1700 reviews. In sixth place is Menorca, followed by Mallorca. To complete the top 10 they added, Rome, Zante, and Mykonos.
